The part nobody warns you about
The deck is a hinge, and the motor is the heavy end
Almost every home treadmill folds. That fold is a hinge, and a hinge is a lever. If the deck is not locked with the factory pin or latch before the machine tips, it swings the second the angle changes, and it swings with all six feet of deck behind it. That is the swing that catches fingers against a door casing and the corner that gouges drywall on a stair turn. So we lock it first, every time, and we put a ratchet strap around the folded frame as a second lock in case the factory latch is tired, which happens on an older machine.
Then the weight. Look under the front shroud and there is the motor, the flywheel, and the front roller, all sitting in one spot. A treadmill is front heavy by design, so it does not balance on a hand truck the way a boxed appliance does. It wants to rotate around the strap. On stairs that means the motor end travels low with a person below it controlling the descent, and that is the honest reason this is a two-person carry and not a solo move. The console helps or hurts depending on what you do with it. On most models the uprights come off with four to six bolts, which drops the height and kills the top-heavy leverage in one shot. The thing that never happens: dragging it on the belt. The belt and rollers are the expensive part and concrete does not care.

- Console uprights come off on most models with four to six bolts. Hardware goes in a labeled bag taped to the frame so nothing walks off.
- Moving blankets over the console, the side rails, and every strap contact point. The plastic scratches long before the steel does.
- No dragging on the belt or the deck. It rides on the hand truck or we carry it, it does not get skated across a driveway.
