An 88 inch sofa needs room to pivot at a stair landing or an entry hallway, and nobody measures the turn. So it sits in the driveway. Now you are calling around on a Sunday, the seller has your money, and it is starting to rain on your new upholstery.

A standard interior door is 30 to 32 inches wide. A standard sofa is 34 to 38 inches deep. Those numbers say the couch does not fit, and yet it does, because a couch does not go through flat. It goes through on its side, and on its side the depth stops mattering. What matters is the height of the back, usually 30 to 36 inches, against the diagonal of the opening. A 32 inch wide by 80 inch tall doorway has a diagonal of about 86 inches. That diagonal is the real opening. Take the door off its hinges and you gain another inch and a half to two inches of clear width, which sounds like nothing and is regularly the difference between in and out. Two pins and a hammer, five minutes, and we put the door back before we leave.

The part almost nobody checks is the turn radius. A sofa that clears the front door still has to swing. At a stair landing or an L shaped hallway you need clearance equal to roughly the sofa length on the diagonal, and an 88 inch sofa needs a landing that most Old Northeast bungalows in St. Pete simply do not have. That is where legs come off first. Most sofa legs unthread by hand or take a single Phillips bracket, and pulling four legs drops the footprint 4 to 6 inches and lets the frame pivot on its corner instead of grinding a stair rail. Sectionals split at the connector clips underneath, usually a metal bracket you lift and slide apart, and a three piece sectional becomes three separate carries that each fit easily. Recliners have a hidden hinge at the back that lets the backrest lift off. We check all of this before anything gets loaded, because finding out at your door is the expensive version.

Ratchet straps run over the blanket, never bare against fabric, so the strap does not print a line into the upholstery.
The sofa rides on its back or its side against the van wall, not seat down, so the cushions and springs are not carrying the load for the whole drive.
Cushions come off and ride separately. Loose cushions in a moving van slide, absorb grit and end up under something heavy.

Will my couch fit through a 30 inch door?

Usually yes, and the door width is not the reason. A sofa goes through on its side, so what matters is the back height against the diagonal of the opening. A 30 by 80 door gives you about 85 inches diagonally. The real question is the turn on the other side of the door. Send us a photo of the entry and the hallway and we will tell you before we load it.

Can you pick up a couch I bought on Facebook Marketplace?

That is most of what we do. Send us the listing photo, the address and where it is going. We handle the pickup and the seller does not need to do anything but open the door. Marketplace couches are the one where measuring matters most, because the seller usually has no idea what the dimensions are.

How much does couch delivery cost in Clearwater?

Flat rate by distance. Up to 5 miles is $50, 5 to 10 miles is $75, 10 plus miles is $120. Clearwater to St. Pete or Tampa typically lands in the $120 band. Palm Harbor is far enough north that it usually does too. Big sectionals and multi-piece loads get a flat quote upfront, and there is no deposit.

Do you take the legs off and put them back on?

Yes, and we bring the screwdrivers for it. Most legs unthread by hand or sit on a single bracket. Taking four legs off drops the footprint enough to clear a stair landing that otherwise stops the piece cold. They go back on at your place before we leave, and we hand you any hardware we removed.

Can you move a couch upstairs to a second floor apartment?

Depends on the stairs and the weight. Solo, Matthew tops out around 300 lbs, about the weight of a refrigerator, and a sleeper sofa with a steel frame can beat that. For those he brings one helper, so it is two people max. Tell us the floor and whether there is a landing turn when you text, and we will tell you honestly whether it is a one man job.
