Why a half-inch 4x8 sheet has to ride flat and fully supported
A 1/2 inch 4x8 sheet of gypsum runs about 50 to 55 pounds, and the weight is the easy part. The problem is that a sheet is floppy. The gypsum core has almost no strength on its own. The paper facing is what holds the sheet together and gives it stiffness, which is why the paper face and the corners are what actually get destroyed in transit. Let a sheet sag between two support points and the core cracks along the long edge, right under the paper, invisible. Stand it on edge in a pickup and every pothole on Ulmerton Road drops all 55 pounds onto a two-inch strip of bottom edge. That strip is the tapered edge. It is the exact part of the sheet your tape and mud depend on, and a cracked corner is a bad joint later.
So the rule is simple. Sheets ride flat, stacked, and supported across the whole face, with nothing underneath that makes a pressure point. Our cargo van carries 8-foot sheet goods flat by itself, no trailer needed. We haul 1/2 inch by 8 foot gypsum board that way, laid flat on the deck. Longer sheets go on the 13 foot enclosed trailer. Enclosed is the other half of the job, because a Clearwater afternoon storm off the Gulf will find an open bed at 3pm and soft paper does not come back.
